North America: “We see good things down the road, this year looks promising for growers”

Starting as a one-man operation over thirty years ago, A.M.A. Plastics Ltd. has been offering products for different sectors of the horticultural industry since 1982. After several years of growth, they now boast a large product line and a robust presence throughout North America, and throughout that growth process they’ve seen several trends. One of those recent trends, noted A.M.A.’s Rick Bradt, has been an increasing focus on products for growing food. In fact, the trend has picked up so much steam that he thinks it’s one of the drivers helping the industry out of the low period it’s experienced the past few years.

A.M.A. provides trays, containers and growing substrates for the nursery and horticultural industries. A large portion of their business involves the manufacture and selling of Ellepots for plant propagation, and they’re currently the largest manufacturer of the product in North America, with manufacturing facilities in Ontario and California. But the majority of their business involves various other containers used in plant propagation and finishing, and in both areas, Bradt has seen more and more new customers use their products for the propagation of fruits, vegetables and tree nuts.

“The fruit and tree nut business has really taken off for us, especially in California,” said Bradt. He explained that, unlike the 1980′s, when more customers were focused on flowers, their new customers are often looking more to growing food. He mentioned several possible reasons for the shift, such as local food movements, but whatever the reason for the shift, he sees it as one of the things helping them get out of a few rough years. Continue reading

Chris Hadfield takes command of the Space Station later this month. In Chris’s words: “Point Pelee and Pelee Island – the very southernmost tip of Canada decorated with a jigsaw of February ice.” For us, it’s a photo of A.M.A., but we suppose for everyone else, they are looking at the bigger picture. Nevertheless, we appreciate all the great shots from space being posted at @ Cmdr_Hadfield

You can see A.M.A.’s hometown, Kingsville, ON (Canada’s southernmost town) and Leamington, ON. These two towns are home to the largest concentration of greenhouses in North America, covering more than 5,000,000m² primarily for hydroponic vegetable production, but also some flowering crop production. Within a four hour drive of us in Ontario, are more than 800 hectares of greenhouses and more just across the border in Michigan.

Also visible in the photo is Point Pelee, the southernmost part of Canada’s mainland, Pelee Island, the southernmost inhabited part of Canada and Middle Island, the southernmost land in Canada (now part of Point Pelee National Park). The ice covering Lake Erie shifts almost daily during the winter. Point Pelee crosses the 42nd Parallel North, which also denotes the California/Oregon state border.

A.M.A. Plastics Ltd. is ideally located, within 25 minutes drive of the Windsor/Montreal 401 highway corridor and 45 minutes drive of the Windsor/Detroit international border crossing with access directly onto Interstate highways I-75 heading south to Florida and I-94 and then I-80 heading all the way to Montana and California.

We ship many of our products right across North America: Al’s Flower Pouch; Al’s Flower Pocket; Ellepots by A.M.A.; Hydroponic Supplies including substrates, tomato clips, twines; Epla containers; Tyne tree support, labels, markers.

We ship everything from small packages by UPS or FedEx to single or multi pallet orders by LTL carriers to full truck load orders via road or rail transport.

Hydroponics, a part of A.M.A. Plastics Ltd., is pleased to be adding the Agrifast TOM-System to its product lineup for the North American Hydroponic Vegetable Grower Market. The TOM-System, developed in Spain, is a

revolutionary change in tomato clip installation, saving a grower 30% or more in labor cost and time on the clip application process. This significant reduction can mean a big improvement in profitability for growers, especially following a year in which growers struggled with low prices for their product.

The TOM-System utilizes a battery powered “stapler” unit which is used to apply the metal clips around the twine and vine quickly and accurately. The installer can carry many more clips along with him due to their lightweight and small size, meaning fewer times required in a day to “reload”. Freight costs are also lowered due to the small size of the clips. An added bonus found in Europe, is the degradability of the clips from oxidization after crop removal. TOM-System clips, when used with A.M.A.’s Lankhorst Bio-Twine, can be taken out with the vines to compost. The thin steel clips rust away quickly in such conditions, but last the entire length of the crop life in fine shape. The Bio-Twine also degrades in the compost process.

The TOM-System is suitable for hydroponic pepper, cucumber and eggplant crops.

You can learn more about the Agrifast TOM-System at www.amahydroponics.com. Watch the video. A.M.A. has been serving the horticulture and nursery industries since 1982.

A.M.A. Plastics Ltd.’s Managing Directors, Cornelia & Richard Bradt, were pleased to recently host the Essex County Brain Tumour Night of Hope at Pelee Island Winery in Kingsville, ON, on behalf of Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.

Guests included business owners from Kingsville and Leamington, and were treated to a tasting of Pelee Island Winery’s finest wines, generously donated by the winery, led by Winemaster Walter Schmoranz, and a fabulous charcuterie and cheese selection from The Butcher of Kingsville.

Celebrating 10 years of working together with Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, Connie & Rick presented A.M.A.’s annual donation, raised from the proceeds of the Canadian sales of Al’s Flower Pouch™, to Susan Marshall, Executive Director and Fred Wilder, Board Member of Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. The $6,000.00 cheque pushed A.M.A.’s donations to over $62,000 since 2003. Thousands of Al’s Flower Pouches are printed each year with the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada logo and contact information to help increase awareness about the foundation and its services to patients and caregivers. A.M.A. Plastics Ltd. and Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada are both celebrating 30 year anniversaries in 2012, with Al’s Flower Pouch celebrating 20 years of sales worldwide.

The Night of Hope was held to raise awareness about brain tumour issues and garner support for three important projects being undertaken by Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada including: a Canadian Brain Tumour Registry (no complete brain tumour database exists in Canada); Incentives to assist young researchers and physicians in Brain Tumour Research and to help recruit young people into the fields of brain tumour treatment and research; and a program to assist children surviving brain tumours with post-secondary education opportunities.

A.M.A. Staff was on hand at Point Pelee National Park, Leamington, ON, to help with a native species restoration project. A.M.A.’s John Vezina, Manager, Ellepots & Pre-Fill, got A.M.A. involved last year and this year the project grew to over 5,000 plants. Students from Cardinal Carter Secondary School helped last fall to gather seed from several native species. In the spring they cleaned the seed and sowed it into Ellepots donated by A.M.A. Plastics Ltd., under the supervision of Park staff.
The propagation in the school’s greenhouse was very successful and despite the rain, the transplanting on June 1st went quickly with about 90 students, school and park staff and 6 A.M.A. staff members on hand.

Park staff were pleased with the germination rates of these plants, which included flowers and grasses, and they also appreciated the easy transplanting. It was a pleasure working with interested young people and A.M.A. is looking forward to helping out again. You can see more about this project in the April and June Press Release section of A.M.A.’s website at A.M.A. Press Release including a link to a YouTube PowerPoint photo summary .
