How To
1. How to Fill
Two Methods to Fill:
- By hand on a potting bench – use a 4″ or 5″ pot and just scoop the mix into the pouch until it’s full
- With Al’s Hopper, an economical way to fill Al’s Flower Pouch – Al’s Hopper is recommended for anyone filling 500 or more Flower Pouches. One or two people can fill pouches very quickly. Click here for more information on Al’s Hopper.
- • Use a good soilless mix with peat, vermiculite and perlite. It should include a wetting agent and starter charge. It’s easier if the mix is slightly moist (not wet) when you fill. We recommend Fafard’s PV20 Mix.
- Some growers mix in a little slow-release fertilizer and or polymer agents for moisture. We don’t offer advice on these products and recommend you experiment a little before you do this on a large scale.
2. How to Plant
- Lay the pouch on its back and stick your plugs through the pre-cut slits
- 512, 432, 406, 392, 342, 338, 288 plugs work best, but you can use anything up to a 1204 cell pack (you may have to stretch or cut the slits a little. Your premium plants like fuchsia, new guinea impatiens, lantana, geraniums, etc may require you to stretch the slits a little bit – they are well worth it when you see the finished product!
You may chose to leave the pouches on the floor or a bench to set in for a few days before you hang them. Many growers hang their pouches immediately so as not to take up valuable space for other crops (the real beauty of Al’s Flower Pouch for a grower).
- Be sure the plugs are secure in the pouch. If you hang them immediately, go back a few days later to ensure that none have become loose or fallen out during the initial watering and setting in. This should not be a common problem.
- Be Creative
- Almost any annual will work
- Try herbs or even vegetables
- Al’s Flower Pouch is meant to be used outdoors, so keep that in mind
Here is a short list of plants we’ve seen in 10 hole and 6 hole flower pouches:
| Impatiens Pansies (great in early spring and in the fall) Begonias Fall Mums Petunias (Fantasy is a great variety) Coleus (wow!) Viola Sweet 100 Tomatoes |
Verbena Strawberries Portulaca (Ube is great for hot conditions) Herbs Ice Plant (heat tolerant) Bridal Veil Scaevola Million Bells |
You name it! Try new things on a small scale. Go big when you’re happy with the results
Here is a short list of plants we’ve seen in 5 hole flower pouches:
| Ivy Geraniums Wave Petunias (one in the top and two or three more plants – huge!) |
Lantana (great in hot climates) New Guinea Impatiens (big, full Flower Pouches) |
3. How to Hang
- Use sturdy plastic or steel S-hooks on your side wall or gable end structure (A.M.A. makes steel S-Hooks 6″ – 36″)
- Hang up to four high in a solid growing wall to make the best use of space and reduce handling/transport time.
4. How to Water
- Hand watering – use a good wand and water breaker like the Dramm PL1000 and water well at least once per day. Hot or windy weather will require more frequent watering. Water the first pouch, second, third, etc., then go back to the first, second, third, etc. to ensure the Flower Pouch is watered thoroughly.
- Drip irrigation – This makes watering a breeze. Just stick a dripper in each pouch and use the same fertilizer schedule as your baskets. You may need to use a little trial and error to find the right moisture level and may find that the same schedule as your baskets works just fine. The initial investment in the drip lines will pay for itself. It’s better to water slowly for longer periods.
- Be sure the pouch doesn’t completely dry out.
- Fertilize as you would your hanging baskets.
